Multicultural Week took place from April 10 to 14, 2023 and was an opportunity for students to experience the diversity that makes up St. John’s-Ravenscourt School through music, dance, cultural attire and storytelling. Students celebrated throughout the week, shared their culture through a multicultural showcase and were visited by presenters showing the value of keeping traditions alive.
The multicultural showcase was met with enthusiasm as it gave everyone the opportunity to show off what they are most proud of about their culture. What makes every student unique was recognized and everyone got to show off their cultural attire while others were able to express their singing, drumming and dancing skills.
Middle School and Senior School French classes enjoyed a uniquely French experience thanks to TiBert et Douzie, a multi-talented duo of French Métis artists. Douzie mesmerized everyone with his fiddle and turntable by playing traditional songs with a modern twist. The expert storyteller and juggler TiBert thrilled everyone with his stories about fur and hunting, and the jam continued with his jaw harp and a variety of traditional percussion instruments.
“It was an honour having the experience to learn about the voyager traditions,” said Kathy (Grade 9), “With TiBert, I was able to see some different animal furs and hear stories about how hunting works. With Douzie, I enjoyed getting to hear the mix of modern and traditional music and getting to see his DJ station and violin.”
SJR is proud to be accredited and affiliated with several local, national and international educational organizations.
St. John’s-Ravenscourt School was founded in 1820 principally to serve the children of the Selkirk settlers. By 1834 there were forty students, evenly split between boys and girls. SJR has inevitably grown and changed over the years since, though its success throughout has been unimpeachable. Today the programs are as strong as our reputation. A strong academic program is paired with an equally strong attention to the values of stewardship, ethical leadership, and excellence in all areas of academic, social and athletic life.
