The Genders and Sexualities Alliance meets with the Rainbow Resource Centre
The GSA Club, which stands for Genders and Sexualities Alliance, is a supportive, social and active group here at SJR. The Club meets a couple of times a month, over a lunch hour, to catch up, connect and brainstorm ways that they can advocate and support anyone who is a part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community at the School. One initiative the group is currently engaged in is the creation of a Pride banner that the group, designed by the students, to share at this year’s Winnipeg Pride Parade.
Earlier this month, the Club invited Dene Guillas from the Rainbow Resource Centre (RRC) to talk about programs the RRC offers, along with a long list of ideas of how our GSA can grow to support more students within our School. The RRC is a community support centre that offers counselling, education and programming that celebrate the special identities of people who are part of the rainbow. During his presentation, Dene was kind enough to share his own personal story and his path to becoming so deeply involved in the RRC. He showcased different programs that the Centre offers, from fun camps and programs to educational opportunities, which aim to build capacity for organizations and people to better serve 2SLGBTQ+ friends, colleagues and loved ones.
Along with being an enlightening and empowering presentation, it was also very helpful for students to hear some of Dene’s ideas on how we can grow the GSA at our School and its impact on our entire community.
SJR is proud to be accredited and affiliated with several local, national and international educational organizations.
St. John’s-Ravenscourt School was founded in 1820 principally to serve the children of the Selkirk settlers. By 1834 there were forty students, evenly split between boys and girls. SJR has inevitably grown and changed over the years since, though its success throughout has been unimpeachable. Today the programs are as strong as our reputation. A strong academic program is paired with an equally strong attention to the values of stewardship, ethical leadership, and excellence in all areas of academic, social and athletic life.
