City Forester visits Kindergarten!

While studying trees as part of their science curriculum, one Kindergarten class was excited to host Martha Barwinsky ’83, City Forester with the City of Winnipeg.  Martha has been involved in arboriculture and urban forestry for over 20 years.

During her presentation, Martha showed many samples of bark, branches and seeds that help make up a large part of Winnipeg’s tree population. By passing around samples of different trees, students were able to engage with different species in such an informative way, right from their classroom. Being located on the river, SJR is home to an abundance of different tree species that spread across the campus. With Martha’s engaging presentation and knowledge, students got a glimpse into the world of trees and were able to develop a better understanding of how trees impact our lives.

Not only was it great for students to meet a certified arborist and tree specialist, but to meet an SJR Alumni who has made such an impact in our city and our urban forest. It was really a wonderful opportunity.
