Human Rights Explored

Grade 8 students read multiple fiction and nonfiction human rights texts and participated in book club discussions. After reading several texts, students were challenged to present a human rights violation they identified during their reading and subsequently produce a 3D model to represent their ideas. During the Planning stage, students met with another Core group of Grade 8 students to share, generate, and spread preliminary ideas. After consultation, students moved onto the Design and Construction phase and completed their model over a span of three classes. The presentation of their model to their classmates, as well as another Core group, allowed them to spotlight the human right violation in a way that encouraged students to further contemplate the experiences of people around the world. The project invited students to investigate complex concepts about human rights and showcased their creative abilities to a wider audience.
