The road less 'sung'!

SJR was pleased to welcome a performance from alum, Patrick ‘Declan’ McGarry ’02, who is part of a Nashville based duo, Me and Molly.

Students were treated to five songs from their debut album which will be released tomorrow, February 3, 2017, as well as a special song that he wrote as a teenager along with two other SJR alumni Ben Grynol ’99 (who visited us recently to talk about entrepreneurship), and Declan’s brother, Connor McGarry ’05, about their summers spent at Lake of the Woods.

Declan spoke to the Grade 12s about following their dreams, as hard as it might be, and taking the 'unconventional' career path. Declan shared that his first time singing in front of a crowd was at an SJR Coffee House in the same room he was performing in today, RWH, and how amazing it felt once he finished singing to have people applaud him. Molly, who performs along with Declan, shared their process of songwriting and the importance of being who you are and honouring yourself by speaking the truth.

After the performances, students had an opportunity to ask the duo individual questions and Mr. Ray Grynol, SJR English teacher, and Declan had a discussion about whether or not ‘Me and Molly’ would be considered proper grammar!

Declan moved to Tennessee about 15 years to follow his dream of singing, and was one of four artists nominated in 2012 for the CCMA New Artist Showcase.
