Songwriting with Craig Cardiff

On Thursday, November 10, Grade 7 students welcomed Canadian folk singer Craig Cardiff to the classroom for a songwriting workshop. Craig, originally from Waterloo, has released over fifteen albums, regularly tours North America and Europe, and was nominated for several JUNO Awards in 2012.
Craig began the workshop by sharing his music and inspirations for songwriting: why he writes, what songs mean, and explored why music has such an impact on people – are we connected to the lyrics, the melody, or an event they remind us of? Students learned that it could be a combination of all of the above. Craig then shared a book he circulates at his workshops, the “Book of Truths;” a collection of stories, confessions, hopes, secrets and dreams shared by fans. He has used this book as a source of inspiration for his latest album Love Is Louder (Than All The Noise).
Students then divided up into small groups to write a song under Craig’s guidance. Beginning with the phrase “Love is louder,” students worked together to come up with lyrics around the prompt. The workshop ended with Craig performing each group’s song, taking the lyrics they’d written as verses and creating a chorus out of their favourite idea. Each group finished with a fun and memorable song, and an enriched understanding of the power of music.
