Kids helping Kids

The students of 3CB wanted to raise funds for KidSport Winnipeg and chose a very unique way to accomplish their goal. After researching different charities the students chose KidSport Winnipeg because they really agreed with the charity's mission of offering financial assistance for registration fees and equipment to kids so ‘All Kids Can Play’.
But what is the best way to raise funds? Well, host a Spell-for-a-Cause event. Students chose between two lists each containing 40 pre-selected words and asked family and friends to make a pledge for every word they spelled correctly or to make donation to the cause. After studying and practicing the students were masters at spelling their words and raised a grand total of $2,252!
To celebrate this amazing fundraising achievement, KidSport Winnipeg volunteers visited the students on Thursday, June 11, 2015. Through a presentation students learned that since 2004 they have distributed $1,226,925 to cover registration fees for 5,310 children from families who are unable to afford to put their children in sport.
After the presentation the students and parents took to the fields for a ‘friendly’ game of Dodgeball. After the fun game, the Menchies Frozen Yogurt mascot brought treats for all the students and parents who participated in the game.
This fundraising initiative furthers SJR’s goal of getting young people involved in supporting community and charitable causes while teaching the importance of active healthy living. Active healthy living is part of SJR’s Vision, Mission & Values. The importance of physical activity is an essential part of meeting the growth and development needs of our students, helping them to establish patterns for active healthy living that they will carry into adulthood.
KidSport strongly believes all kids should be given the opportunity to play the sport they love and the students and families of 3CB couldn’t agree more!

Congratulations to the SJR Girls' Varsity Rugby team who won the Division City Championship last Thursday, May 28, 2015.
In their first season in 15-a-side rugby the girls prevailed after three games in four days to win the City Championship. What we lacked in size, we made up for it with huge hearts and desire to win.
Team members included girls from Grade 9-12. Our combination of experienced players and keen rookies turned into a winning formula. Mr. Campbell stated "this is the most dedicated group of athletes we have ever fielded for Girls Rugby".
Way to go!
