SJR was proud to host the Confederation Cup for the Prairie Region this past weekend, this tournament is held as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Confederation. The Confederation Cup gives high school debaters from across the country the opportunity to debate the issues that have shaped our country from before Confederation to the present day.
There are four regional events which will determine the sixteen (four from each region) English teams that will participate in the English category of the Confederation Cup Finals in Ottawa, Ontario on April 28-30, 2017.
The honorary co-chairs were former Prime Ministers, The Right Honourable Paul Martin and The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney. The Justice Minister, and SJR alum, The Honourable Heather Stefanson ‘88, presented the awards at the Manitoba Legislative Building.
SJR had six of the eight quarter-finalist teams, including the top team, Katherine (Grade 12) and Kristin (Grade 11). We also had eight of the top 10 speakers. As a result of their success, two SJR teams, Katherine and Kristin as well as Grade 12s, Stefan and Justin, qualified for the Confederation Cup Finals in Ottawa this spring. The Finals are an expenses-paid opportunity for Canada’s best young debaters to experience our nation’s capital, hear from some of Canada’s most celebrated and opinionated voices, and engage in collegial, competitive debate all in celebration of Canada’s 150th.
